HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS CAN LEARN ABOUT VARIOUS HEALTHCARE CAREERS
ANKENY, IOWA (September 5, 2024) – High school students in Polk County, and the surrounding area, have a unique opportunity to get up-close and personal with a variety of healthcare professionals at the Polk County Healthcare Workforce Collaborative’s upcoming Discover Healthcare Day. The event takes place on Des Moines Area Community College’s Ankeny Campus on September 19th from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.
This event is for 9-12th grade students interested in exploring future educational and career opportunities in healthcare. There are many different types of careers in the healthcare industry, both patient and non-patient facing that make up an organization. From the nurse who helps care for patients, to the imaging staff, to the paramedics and EMTs who take care of patients pre-hospital and through transfers. Students will explore different opportunities in healthcare from a clinical side through conversations and activities with over 12 different departments through Broadlawns, MercyOne, and UnityPoint healthcare professionals. In addition, you’ll learn about educational opportunities in these fields from DMACC, Des Moines University, Grand View University, and Mercy College of Health Sciences.
“Discover Healthcare Day is a great opportunity for students to meet current healthcare professionals from many backgrounds and working in a variety of high-demand roles in the healthcare system,” says PCHWC Work Based Learning Navigator Lynn Torrence. “We want students to walk away excited about the career options in healthcare and clear next steps about how to pursue their career of interest.”
There is limited seating available, so for those interested in attending be sure to register ahead of time online at PolkCountyHealthcare.org/Events.
The Polk County Healthcare Workforce Collaborative is a joint effort between Broadlawns Medical Center, Des Moines Area Community College, Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences, Grand View University, Mercy College of Health Sciences, MercyOne Hospitals, and UnityPoint Health to raise awareness and excitement about healthcare careers, to educate more Iowans in high-demand occupations and employ these individuals in healthcare organizations in Polk County.
